Florida Age Group Championships – March 7-10, 2013 – SHARKS WIN FLAGS!!!

The Sharks were successful in defending their own pool and won the team competition at the 2013 Spring Florida Age Group Championships completed over the weekend.

The Sharks won the team competition over the Bolles School Sharks and Tampa Bay Community Aquatics in 3rd.  The Sharks also won the Team Age Group competition in the following groups: Girls 10&U; Boys 10&U; Boys 11-12; and Boys 13-14 Age Groups.

Individually, Shark swimmers Drew Clark and Austin Katz finished 1st and 2nd in the Boys 13-14 Individual High Point Award competition.  Additionally, Alex Webster finished 2nd in the Boys 11-12  High Point competition and Jason Brzozowski finished 3rd in the Boys 10&U High Point competition.  Congratulations to Drew, Austin, Alex and Jason!!

The Sharks also won 12 individual titles including:  Drew Clark with five wins in the Boys 13-14 Age Group (1000 Free; 400 IM; 200 Fly; 500 Free; and the 1650 Free) - Drew also set a new FLAG record in the 1650 Free with a time of 15:42.39 – Congrats Drew;  Patrick Amistoso won two events in the Boys 11-12 Age Group (50 Fly and 100 Fly);  Alex Webster won two events in the Boys 11-12 Age Group (500 Free and 1000 Free);  Jason Brzozowski won two events in the Boys 10&U Age Group (500 Free and 100 Back); and Isabel Traba in the Girls 11-12 Age Group won the 200 IM.  Congratulations to Drew, Patrick, Alex, Jason and Isabel on a great meet!!!

Not to ignore maybe the most exciting events – the relays, the Sharks won a total of four relays at FLAG’s including:  Boys 11-12 200 Free Relay – Patrick Amistoso, Alex Webster, Nicholas Hernandez-Tome, and Alexander Gusev;  Boys 11-12 400 Freestyle Relay - Patrick Amistoso, Alexander Gusev, Nicholas Hernandez-Tome, and Alex Webster; Boys 11-12 400 Medley Relay -  Alex Webster, Patrick Amistoso, Alexander Gusev, and Nicholas Hernandez-Tome; and Boys 13-14 400 Freestyle Relay – Keanan Dols, Drew Clark, Austin Katz, and Matthew Garcia.

A number of Shark records also were broken; Alex Webster set three new Shark records in the Boys 11-12 Age Group including: 500 Free (4:55.18); 1000 Free (10:06.29); and the 100 Back (58.34).  Patrick Amistoso set two new Shark records in the Boys 11-12 Age Group including: 50 Fly (26.31) breaking a 13 year old record; and the 100 Fly (57.13).  Finally, Drew Clark set two new Shark records in the Boys 13-14 Age Group: 200 Fly (1:56.32); and the 1650 Free (15:42.39).  There was one new Shark Relay record set: Boys 13-14 200 Free Relay that had been in place since 1977!! (1:33.07) Keanan Dols, Austin Katz, Drew Clark and Matthew Garcia.

Florida Swimming Short Course Senior Championships – Results

YMCA Aquatic Center, Orlando, Florida

The Sharks won the Combined Team competition at the 2013 Spring Florida Senior Championships in Orlando over T2 and ATAC.  Individually, Nicholas Caldwell won the Individual High Point Award for the Senior Age Group.  Nicholas was also one of three Sharks to win an individual event.  He won four titles including the 200 Free; 400 IM; 200 IM; and the 200 Fly.  Congratulations Nicholas!!

Also winning individual titles: Sophie Cattermole won the 14-16 100 Breast; and Danielle Valley won the Senior 1650 Free.  Congratulations to both Sophie and Danielle!!

December Meet Recap – (Gator, Harry Meisel, PYP)

Gator Swim Club Holiday Invitational:

The GSC Holiday meet is traditionally one of the fastest and most competitive meets on the Shark annual calendar.  Impressively, the Sharks won both the Boys and Girls team honors and had a number of impressive individual efforts.  First, five new Shark records were set (or tied):  Taylor Katz – lowered an 11 year old Shark record (Annie Babicz) in the Female Senior 100 Fly (55.37); Cole Firlie – continued his assult on the Shark record book in the Male 8&U age group by lowering his own records in both the 200 Free (2:18.95) and the 100 Back (1:15.22); Patrick Amistosotied a 12 year old record (Spencer Maglich) in the Male 11-12 50 Fly (26.75); and not to be out-done by his younger brother, Brendan Firlie – lowered a record previously held by current Shark Campbell Lee in the Male 11-12 200 Fly (2:13.60).  Congrats to all of our new Shark record holders!

Individually, Shark swimmers won an astounding 27 individual events: Each of the following Sharks won multiple events:  Drew Clark, Boys 13-14 – 4 winning swims (200 Free, 500 Free, 1650 Free, 400 IM); Alex Katz, Boys 15-16 – 2 winning swims (500 Free, 400 IM) – Boys Senior 1 winning swim (200 IM); Talyor Katz, Girls Senior – 3 winning swims (200 Free, 200 Back, 200 Fly); Danielle Valley, Girls Senior – 3 winning swims (500 Free, 1650 Free, 400 IM); Patrick Amistoso, Boys 11-12 – 2 winning swims (50 Breast, 100 Breast); Brenden Firlie, Boys 11-12 – 2 winning swims (200 Fly, 200 IM); Bethany Leap, Girls 15-16 – 2 winning swims (100 Breast, 200 Breast); Katelyn Viera, Girls 10&U – 2 winning swims (50 Back, 100 Back); and Emma Weyant, Girls 10&U – 2 winning swims (50 Free, 200 Free).

The following Sharks each won an individual event: Jason Brzozowski, Boys 10&U (100 Fly); Sophie Cattermole, Girls 15-16 (200 Free); Matt O’Donnell, Boys Senior (1650 Free); and Alexander Webster, Boys 11-12 (200 Free).

2012 Harry Meisel Championships

The Sharks attended the 2012 Harry Meisel Championships in St. Petersburg and had a number of noteworthy results.

Sarsen Whatmore, Boys 11-12 won 2 events (100 Free, 100 Back) and also placed 3rd in two events (100 Fly, 50 Back); Marian McKane, Girls 11-12 won the 100 Fly and was 2nd in the 50 Free; and Zachary Szmania, Boys 11-12 won the 100 Breast.  Congrats to our individual Shark winners.

Additionally, Max Milburn, Boys 9-10 finished 2nd in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 100 IM; Daniel Jones, Boys 15-18 finished 2nd in the 200 Fly; Robert Obendorf, Boys 11-12 finished 2nd in the 100 Breast; Alex Naugle, Girls 15-18 finished 3rd in the 100 IM; and Max Eckerman, Boys 8&U finished 3rd in the 50 Breast.

SHARKS WIN SENIOR CHAMPS!

Congratuations to Alex Katz (Boys 15-16) and Ashlee Linn (Senior Girls) for winning Individual High Point Honors!  Additionally, the Sharks had a number of winning swims during the weekend including:  Ashlee Linn: Senior Girls (5) -  100 Free; 100 Back; 200 Back; 200 IM; and 200 Breast.  Danielle Valley: Senior Girls (3) – 400 Free; 800 Free; and 1500 Free.  Matt O’Donnell: 15-16 Boys (1) – 1500 Free.  Alex Katz:  15-16 Boys (6) – 200 Free; 800 Free; 200 Back; 200 Fly; 200 IM; and 400 IM.  Nicholas Caldwell: Senior Boys (2) – 400 Free; and 800 Free. Taylor Katz: Senior Girls (2) – 200 Free; and 200 Fly.

A number of Shark records fell including: Ashlee Linn – Senior Girls 200 Back (2:14.38) and 200 IM (2:18.04);  Taylor Katz – Senior Girls 100 Fly (1:02.92); Alex Katz – 15-16 Boys 100 Free (52.50), 200 Free (1:52.65), and a record that was set in 1978 by Jack Salzman the 200 IM (2:08.33); and Patrick Wall – 15-16 Boys 200 Breast (2:26.24). 

Additionally, the following relay records were set: Senior Girls  - 400 Free RelayAshlee Linn, Talyor Katz, Sophie Cattermole and Niamh O’Grady (3:54.88); 800 Free RelayAshlee Linn, Taylor Katz, Danielle Valley and Sophie Cattermole (8:18.48); 400 Medley Relay – Ashlee Linn, Bethany Leap, Taylor Katz, and Sophie Cattermole (4:21.04).  Senior Boys - 400 Free Relay – Alex Katz, Nicholas Caldwell, Liam McKane and Rees Cattermole (3:32.74); 800 Free Relay – Nicholas Caldwell, Derek Pridemore, Liam McKane and Alex Katz (7:39.18).

Olympic Trials – 2012

The Sharks were well represented at Olympic Trials with a number of outstanding swims including three in the top 20 - Nicholas Caldwell finished 18th in the 400 Free; Alex Katz qualified for the semi-finals in the 200 Back and finished 11th; and Danielle Valley qualified for the finals in the 800 Free and finished 8th!  Three Shark records were set: Alex Katz set the Boys 15-16 400 Free record with a time of 3:57.78, and he also set the record for the Boys 15-16 200 Back with a time of 2:00.66 (breaking his own record).  Not to be outdone, Talyor Katz set the Girls Senior 200 Fly record with a time of 2:14.92 (also breaking her own record).  Congratulations to all or our Olympic Trial Swimmers, Nicholas, Alex, Danielle, Taylor, Ashlee Linn, Derek Pridemore and Kate Woolbright.

 

GCST Saturday Morning at the Races – July 7th, 2012

Results for the GCST Saturday Morning at the Races Meet – held on July 7, 2012  at the Florida Gulf Coast University Aquatics Center.  We had a number of swimmers secure new JO and Senior Champ cuts (see below) and may swimmers improve seed times for upcoming championship meets.

2012 Shark Open Results

2012 SYS Shark Open – June 29 – July 1, 2012

Thank you to all the volunteers that made the Shark Open possible – the weather was great and the swimming was fast!

There were 39 Sharks that made new FLAG cuts and 14 that made new Senior Champ cuts – Congrats to all swimmers!!  We are happy to say that 53 swimmers are too many to list here; see the links below for a complete list of new cuts.  Individual shark swimmers winning high point awards:  Grace Hu, 8&U girls; Cole Firlie, 8&U boys; Olivia Graham, 9-10 girls; Nancy Hu, 13-14 girls; Campbell Lee, 13-14 boys; and Sophie Cattermole, Senior girls. 

Sharks in Open Water Nationals

Patrick Wall and Nicholas Caldwell swam in the 2012 Open Water National Championship on April 27 and 29 in Ft. Myers. Nicholas placed 15th in the 10K with a time of 2:02.08.  The winning time was 1:58.03. Patrick placed 16th in the 5K with a time of 59:14.87. The winning time was 57:50.92. Way to go open water Sharks!

FLAGs March 8–11

The Sharks capped a successful weekend with the Team Title at the 2012 Spring Florida Age Group Championships!  By a final margin of 94 points, SYS edged the Bolles School Sharks – the Champion of the 2011 Summer FLAG’s meet.   Additionally, both the Boys 10&U’s and 11-12’s won high point for their age groups.   The Sharks also were awarded the Spirit Award for their good sportsmanship and enthusiastic support of the team (FTT)!   Congratulations to the Team!!

There were many exceptional performances, but none better over the whole weekend than those turned in by Austin Katz, the Boys 11-12 High Point winner, and Campbell Lee the Boys 13-14 co-High Point winner.   Not to be outdone, SYS had 41 athletes score points in individual events and the following swimmers finished top 20 in points in their respective age groups:  Girls 10&U: Olivia Graham (6th), and Emma Weyant (18th).  Boys 10&U:  Arik Katz (8th), and Jason Brzozowski (9th).  Girls 11-12: Lara Hernandez-Tome (13th), and Isabel Traba (20th).  Boys 11-12: Austin Katz (1st), Alex Webster (4th), Brett Riley (18th), and Michael Knoch (20th).  Girls 13-14: Nancy Hu (3rd),  Spence Atkins (8th), and Samantha Smithburger (11th).  Boys 13-14: Campbell Lee (1st), Carter Page (7th), and Drew Clark (16th).

We also had a number of winning swims including:  Arik Katz (1), Boys 10&U 500 Free;  Austin Katz (4), Boys 11-12 500 Free, 50 Back, 100 Back and 100 Fly; Spence Atkins (1), Girls 13-14 1000 Free;  Nancy Hu (3), Girls 13-14 200 Fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM;  and Campbell Lee (1), Boys 13-14 400 IM.  SYS also won three relay events.  Austin Katz, Alex Webster, Brett Riley and Michael Knoch combined to win both the Boys 11-12 200 Free relay and the 400 Free relay, while Patrick Amistoso stepped in for Brett and combined with Austin, Alex and Michael to win the Boys 11-12 400 Medley relay.

Finally, there were numerous Shark records broken during the meet.  Setting one individual Shark record each were:  Olivia Graham, Girls 10&U 500 Free (5:42.37);  Nancy Hu, Girls 13-14 200 Fly (2:00.26);  Cole Firlie, Boys 8&U 100 Back (1:15.31); and Alex Webster in the Boys 11-12 1000 Free (10:23.24).  Setting two new records was Campbell Lee in the Boys 13-14 200 Breast (2:11.23) and 200 Fly (1:56.35).  Finally in a truly dominant performance,  Austin Katz broke four records in the Boys 11-12 including;  500 Free (5:00.36), 50 Back (27.28), 100 Back (58.39), and the 100 Fly (58.56), a record that had stood for 27 years!

A final thanks to all Shark Families and to all our Volunteers including the Senior Group Swimmers that manned the timer chairs and other positions on Friday and Saturday Night.  The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from Athletes, Visiting Teams and Officials alike – a meet of this caliber could not be run without the tireless and unselfish response of the Shark Family.  JOB WELL DONE!!
