2011 Harry Meisel B-Championships

The Sharks participated in the Harry Meisel B-Championships in St. Petersburg on December 10th and 11th.  Fourteen different Sharks won events over the weekend!  They were: Kirsten Quinn (2); Casey Brogan (2); Maggie Hibnick (2); Yasmine Ibrahim (1); Brian Boehm (1); Reece Whatmore (6); Sarsen Whatmore (4); Zachary Szmania (3); Ethan McNary (2); Hannah Lee Grace (1); Jennifer Dong (1); Theresa Law (1); Tyler Habib (1); and Ashton Edwards (1). Congrats to all Shark Swimmers!

Winter Nationals 2011 Results

Coach Steve Brown travelled to Atlanta on December 1-3 with five Shark swimmers to compete in the AT&T Winter National Championships held at Georgia Tech.  All five had at least one top 20 finish including: Alex Katz (16 - 200BK); Taylor Katz (19 - 800FR); Ashlee Linn (18 - 200IM, 19 – 200BK); Derek Pridemore (11 – 1500FR); and Danielle Valley (9 – 800FR).   

Three Shark records were also broken – Ashlee set new records for Senior Girls 200BK (2:15.97) and 200IM (2:18.06), while Taylor set the new Senior Girls 100FY record (1:03.27). Finally, Ashlee came home with another big accomplishment, her third 2012 Olympic Trial Cut in the 200IM.  Congratulations on a terrific meet Alex, Taylor, Ashlee, Derek and Danielle!!!

The Sharks travelled to Gainesville to compete in the GSC Holiday Classic over the December 2-4 weekend. Traditionally one of the faster meets on the fall schedule the Sharks had a clean sweep of the Team Awards finishing 1 for Combined, Girls and Boys Team Scores.

A number of Sharks won events including Alexander Gusev who won all nine individual events he entered in the Boys 10 & under including: 200FR, 50FY, 100IM, 200IM, 50FR, 50BK, 100BK, 100FR, and 100FY – Congrats Alexander!! Other individual event winners: Grace DiMeo 15-16 Girls 100FY and 200FY; Nancy Hu 13-14 Girls 100FY, 100FR and 200FY; Hannah James Girls 15-16 Girls 200FR and 500FR; Austin Katz Boys 11-12 200FR, 500FR and 100BK; Bethany Leap Girls 15-16 400IM; Campbell Lee Boys 13-14 400IM; Liam McKane Boys 15-16 200IM; and Matt O’Donnell Boys Senior 1650FR. Congrats!!

With the Sharks HOSTING the Spring Florida Age Group Championships (FLAG – or for the rest of us that can’t make the leap – JO’s) on March 8-11, our Athletes continue to ensure SYS will be well represented at our home pool. A total of 15 Athletes made new Short Course Y National cuts: Spence Atkins (500FR); Gannon Davis (100FY, 200IM, 200FY); Grace DiMeo (200FR, 50FR, 500FR); Kelsey Frantz (50FR); Nancy Hu (200FR); Hannah James (100FR); Will Kazokas (200FY); Campbell Lee (400IM, 200IM, 500FR, 200FY); Matt O’Donnell (200FY); Carter Page (500FR); Christian Rauch (200BK, 200FY); Lexy Rabon (200FY); Amber Stich (500FR); Laura Toth (400IM); and Andy Watts (200IM).

Last but maybe most impressive, three Shark records were broken over the weekend: Nancy Hu set the new Girls 13-14 record in the 200FY with a time of 2:02.03; Bethany Leap set the Girls 15-16 200BR record with a time of 2:20.30; and Alexander Gusev set the record in the Boys 9-10 200IM with a time of 2:23.63.Congrats to all our Athletes on a terrific meet!

The Turkey Meet attracted 842 athletes from 18 teams – Thank you again to all our volunteers for making the weekend a great success!

Sharks Represent Their High Schools at State Meets

Last weekend capped three exciting days of competition for are high schools and Shark swimmers. The series started Thursday with the 3A state meet represented by Sarasota, Venice and Riverview high schools.

On the girls side we had state champions in Taylor Katz and Ashlee Linn from Riverview. Katz won the 200 and 500 free, while Linn was victorious in the 200IM and 100 back. Both were part of two winning relays as well. These strong performances propelled the Lady Rams to their second straight title and 5th in the last six years. Also contributing for the Lady Rams were Nancy Hu (5th 100 fly and 6th 200IM), Laura Toth (7th 100 fly), Niamh O’Grady (8th 50 free), and Joanna Murphy (13th 500 free). On the boys side the top finishers for the Rams were Alex Katz (5th 200IM and 2nd 500 free), Ryan Turner (9th 200 and 500 free), Pat Wall (11th 200IM and 15th 100 breast) and Gannon Davis (13th 100 fly).

Sarasota High’s lone competitor on the girls side was Cameron Davis, but the solo Sailor made lots of noise finishing 5th in the 200 free and 3rd in the 500 free. On the Sarasota boy’s team, Andy Watts, was 11th in 500 free.

Derek Pridemore represented his Venice Indians with pride, finishing 3rd in the 500 free and 4th in the 200 free. Also representing Venice, Peyton Leeson finished 14th in the 500 free. Well done 3A swimmers!

On Friday there was the 1A state meet represented locally by Booker, Cardinal Mooney and St. Stephens high schools.

Booker swimmers had a trio of state runner up finishes. Grace Dimeo was 2nd in the 100 fly and 10th in the 100 back. Bethany Leap was 2nd in the 100 breast and also was 5th in the 200IM. On the boys side, Liam McKane was 2nd in the 500 free.

St. Stephens lone representative had herself two strong swims: Ellie Berdusco finished 5th in the 500 free and 6th in the 200 free.

Matt O’Donnell was the top finisher for the Cardinal Mooney Cougars, finishing 7th in the 100 back. He was also 10th in the 500 free. Christian Rauch finished his high school career by finishing 14th in the 100 back. Nicely done 1A swimmers!

The state series concluded Saturday with the 2A state meet represented by Shark swimmers from Lakewood Ranch and Lemon Bay high schools. This day gave us two state champions from the Sharks program. Danielle Valley won the 200 and 500 free, running away with the title in the 500 by 13 seconds! Will Kazokas won the 100 freestyle by four one-hundredths and was 5th in the 50 free. Way to represent the Ranch and the Sharks! Representing Lemon Bay, freshman Sophie Cattermole placed 12th in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Great job 2A swimmers!
