Coach Sherwood Watts Featured in USA Swimming

Coach Watts is featured in this weeks “Coaches You Should Know” article on USA Swimming’s website, USASwimming.org.  ”Coaches You Should Know” features “some of the best age group and grassroots coaches in the nation.”

In addition to the recognition of USA Swimming, Coach Watts was awarded the  Florida LSC 2012 Age Group Coach of the Year.This is the seventh year that Coach Watts has received that distinguished award!

US Paralympics Champion-Liz Smith

Elizabeth (Liz) Smith has represented and trained with the Sharks as a Senior 2 seasonal swimmer for the last several years. Liz recently competed at the 2013 U.S. Paralympics Spring CanAm Nationals that were held at the University of Minnesota.  Liz won 6 events (50 & 100 free, 50 & 100 fly, and the 50& 100 back) setting 2 US para-swimming records in the 50 fly and 50 back. She is currently ranked #1 in the 50 fly and 50 back, #2 in the 100 fly and #4 in the 50 free for the 2013 International Para-swimming season rankings.

With her incredible showing at the 2013 U.S. Paralympics Spring CanAm Nationals Liz has been chosen for the 2013 U.S. Paralympics IPC Swimming World Championship Team that will compete in Montreal, Canada on August 11-17 this year.

SHARKS WIN 7TH STRAIGHT SHORT COURSE YMCA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2013 Short Course YMCA National Championships begins April 3rd and continues through April 6th in Greensboro, NC.  The Sharks are well represented with 44 swimmers making the trip to compete – the picture below is the Shark sendoff on Sunday Afternoon.  Links below.

THE SHARKS DEFENDED THEIR COMBINED TITLE AT THE 2013 SHORT COURSE YMCA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS outpointing Middle Tiger YMCA and York and York County YMCA to win their 7TH TITLE IN A ROW – CONGRATS TO THE TEAM!

The Sharks had strong performances from both the Girls and the Boys teams with the GIRLS FINISHING 1ST in the team competition ahead of York and York County YMCA and Middle Tiger YMCA, and the BOYS FINISHING 2ND behind Wilton Family YMCA.

Outstanding performances by all the Sharks, but noteworthy was Danielle Valley’s four victories (1650 Free, 1000 Free, 500 Free and 400 IM) including new YMCA National records in the 1650 Free, 1000 Free and the 500 Free – setting the latter two in the same 1000 Free swim on Thursday night.  Bethany Leap was the 100 Breaststroke Champion and also set a new YMCA National record in the 200 Breaststroke.  Finally, Alex Katz was the Champion of both the 200 Backstroke and the 1000 Free and was on the victorious Boys 800 Free relay team which also included Liam McKane, Matthew O’Donnell and Carter Page.

There were a total of 17 NEW INDIVIDUAL SHARK RECORDS SET Including the following:  Sophie Cattermole set 3 new records – 15-16 100 Free (50.61), and both the 15-16 and Senior 50 Free (23.47) – the Senior 50 Free was a 31 year old record!; Bethany Leap set 4 new records – both the 15-16 and Senior 100 Breaststroke (1:01.71), and both the 15-16 and Senior 200 Breaststroke (2:11.85); Alex Katz set 3 new records – 15-16 100 Free (45.49) previously set in 1988 by Shark Olympian Tripp Schwenk, 15-16 200 Free (1:36.98), and the 15-16 1000 Free (8:57.80); Danielle Valley set 3 new records – Senior 500 Free (4:40.91), Senior 1000 Free (9:27.19) breaking a record set in 1979 by Shark Olympian Kim Linehan, and the Senior 400 IM (4:10.00); Taylor Katz broke another record set in 1979 by Kim Linehan – the Senior 200 Fly (1:58.93); Patrick Wall set 2 records – Senior 100 Breaststroke (57.18), and the Senior 200 Breaststroke (2:03.68); and Campbell Lee set the 15-16 200 Breaststroke record (2:05.50). Congratulations to all are new Shark individual record holders!!

Both the Boys and Girls team broke multiple relay records as well.

For the Girls, the team of Sophie Cattermole, Hannah James, Taylor Katz and Danielle Valley set records for both the Senior 400 Free Relay (3:23.25), and the Senior 800 Free Relay (7:14.23).   The Senior 200 Medley Relay (1:42.54) was set by the team of Sophie Cattermole, Bethany Leap, Grace DiMeo, and Taylor Katz.

For the Boys, the Team of Matt O’Donnell, Patrick Wall, Liam McKane and Alex Katz set records for both the Senior 200 Medley Relay (1:34.13) and the Senior 400 Medley Relay (3:25.69).

Again, a terrific week of swimming by the Sharks, congratulations again to the YMCA National Team for a job well done!!
