Sarasota YMCA Sharks Swimming

On Friday January 27 and Saturday January 28, SYS will host three Closed YMCA Meets. To qualify to participate in the YMCA State Championship Meet and the YMCA National Championship Meet, each athlete is required to participate in a minimum of three YMCA closed meets in the immediate 12 months prior to Y-States.  The two Y Meets that were held in September at the Venice YMCA pool count as qualifying meets.  Please check with your coach if you have a question regarding requirements for these upcoming meets.

SYS travel trips costs this year will be reduced by $965.00 because our Sharks swimmers raised $915.00 in car wash donations on Saturday and $50.00 from the kettle corn proceeds. Add this money to the previous $688.00 from Car Wash I and the Sharks are on their way to making their championship travel trips more affordable.

As noteworthy as our Sharks fundraising on Saturday were the comments about our swimmers from people who donated at the car wash. These strangers were genuinely impressed by the Sharks teamwork, motivation, and behavior on display. Nice job Sharks!

Car Wash III is slated for February 4th and will include a Valentines Day themed bake sale. We really need Shark parents to help out and bake a Valentine goodie to sell in addition to parents to staff the bake sale from 11 am to 2 pm at the YMCA. Deadlines to book rooms for the upcoming February 10-12 YMCA state meet in Orlando are fast approaching. Room block release dates at four of the hotels occur between this Friday, January 13 and Friday, January 27. Be sure to check the hotel block info page under the “Parents” tab. The password is the same as the roster–ask your coach or email Rachel Bowman.

There is a citywide convention occuring during the same weekend of the meet. If you do not reserve your room before the room block is released, the Sharks rate will not apply and the hotel will sell the rooms. Most hotels in the area are already booked so please book your stay before the rooms are released.

Attention all Senior I, Senior II,  and Junior swimmers qualifying for Senior Champs, Sectionals and Y-Nats: This Saturday, January 7th, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

We will wash cars again to raise money to offset travel costs for your travel meets. Almost every swimmer who will qualify for these meets showed up last time and helped raise almost $700.00–let’s all pitch in again! SYS parents will be on hand to help out and keep you fueled with pizza and Gatorade. (Parents please contact Bill Wall if you can help out.) Additionally, a friend of the Amistoso family is setting up a kettle korn stand at the Y on Saturday to raise funds.

Please wear an SYS T-shirt and bring a great attitude, as well as your shades and sunscreen. We have car washes scheduled for February 4, and March 3  at the pool. Please mark those dates on your calendar as well.
